Everything you need to know about planning a Destination Elopement

Need some guidance for your Elopement planning? - I gotchu!

So be brave and go for what you REALLY want. Let's get this party started shall we?

Step 1

Dream up your Elopement together

Get on the same page

Before the fun of dreaming up your adventure begins, make sure you and your partner are on the same page. Have an open and honest conversation to know for certain you’re both down to eloping and equally as excited to do this - together, as a team.

Ask yourself these questions

What was your best shared adventure? What made it so special? Do you have a favourite moment together? How did it make you feel? What makes you feel alive? Is there something that is unique to you as a couple? Do you want to elope overseas? Do you want a vibrant cultural experience or escape to nature (or both)?

Create a shared vision

Paint the picture together imagining the elopement you would love to experience. Dare to dream big - hiking in the mountains, helicopter rides, standing unter the northern lights, ice skating on a frozen glacier lake. What is your dream trip together? This vision will guide every decision along the way. Creating a moodboard can be very helpful, so head over to trusty Pinterest.

Step 2

Choose between an Elopement and a Micro Wedding

Do you want it to be just the two of you or do you want to bring your closest family and friends to your Elopement? I get that this is a though decision to make, since it has the potential to cause the most friction along the way.

Let’s be real for a moment though: even if someone did react badly, it reflects on them, not on the right or wrong of you chasing your big dream - which is a friggin’ brave thing to do!

So for now the only important question is, how sharing this experience with them would make you feel. Is it a ‘hell yes!’ to inviting guests or just a way to avoid conflict?

Step 3

Create a guest list (if you're having a Micro Wedding)

Who will be the lucky ones to join you? Who will support you and add another layer of love and comfort to your day?

I’ve photographed elopements with only a few friends or parents present and one’s with more guests (up to 20). Bringing your inner circle to share this experience and support you can be a truly magical experience.

It does change the dynamics and feel of the day quite a bit though. So if you bring guests, I’d recommend stretching your elopement over a few days, so you can intentionally spend at least one of them just the two of you to not miss out on that intimate experience that you craved in the first place. And to do those epic adventurous activities!

Step 4

Set a budget and estimate the Elopement cost

So how much does an overseas elopement cost? It can vary a lot depending on the destination, season, travel style and vendors you choose. In my experience the cost for a destination elopement ranges between $10,000 and $50,000, but as with everything it can be done for less or a lot more.

What you might need for your Elopement:

Step 5

Choose your Elopement Destination

Do you have a dream destination on your bucket list? Or a place with shared amazing memories, that you want to go back to?

If you’re feeling a bit overwhelmed by this decision, you can start by thinking about some general locations you like, before narrowing in on a specific country, region or national park. It’s okay to leave room for expert advice. Maybe you don’t even know about your dream destination in Europe yet. Many destinations here are often overlooked. Most know about the Italian Amalfi Coast, Santorini in Greece or Paris.

But have you heard of gems like The Lofoten (Norway), The Faroe Islands, Isle of Skye (Scotland), Madeira island (Portugal), The Arozes (Portugal) or Slovenia? Going for the less obvious choice (being spectacular all the same) can save you from heavy crowds, overpaying and creates a truly unique Elopement experience.

Step 6

Pick your Season

Do you love hot and sunny climate or cool, moody weather? Choose a season that resonates most with both of you and the things you want to do. Certain destinations do have a specific prime time for elopements where the conditions are just right.

Some things to consider:

Some things to consider:

  • Color palette & weather: The landscape of your destination might change optically, depending on the time of year. Same goes for the weather conditions and temperatures - you may want to avoid rainy season or extrem heat.

  • High tourist season: Usually in the summer months or when there are school vacations in the country you’re visiting. Opting for shoulder season and/or weekdays can lower the overall cost and make your elopement even more intimate.

  • Insect plagues: Some areas have a lot of biting and stinging insects in summer. The Scottish Highlands for example are known for their midgets. Or the Scandinavian Mosquitoes. You can avoid getting eaten alive in these countries by eloping there in spring or autumn. And make sure to bring some insect repellant just to make sure.

Step 7

Decide how to get legally married

Legal vs. Symbolic ceremony

Though many EU countries allow non-residents to legally marry, the legalities can often be a hassle to complete and take months to prepare prior. Needing all sorts of documents, translations, apostilles and a legally authorised celebrant to perform your ceremony. To avoid stressing about this, many couples get legally married in their home countries and have a symbolic Elopement at their destination.

Perks of handling the legal part at home

Perks of handling the legal part at home

  • Good for your mental health: It saves you lots of time and nerves and makes the whole Elopement planning process that much easier. Overseas bureaucracy can be a jungle to navigate and isn’t even necessarily english speaking.

  • Opportunity to include guests: Why not include friends and family in this part of your marriage? You could invite them to the court house or have a small reception afterwards. This way you can include your loved ones and still get to enjoy that intimate elopement experience just the two of you.

  • Shape your ceremony freely: With a symbolic ceremony you’re not bound to any official rules. You can choose your location freely and you could even get a friend or relative to perform your ceremony, which makes for such a special moment.

Step 8

Decide the length of your trip

Can you spare a week or two to fully immerse yourselves in the country, the culture and soak in the feel of the whole experience? Will your elopement extend to your honeymoon? Are there other countries close that you want to see too? I’m a huge fan of slow travel and getting to know a place deeply, which often falls short in this fast paced world.

There’s usually no rushing good things - and your elopement is certainly on top of that list. So give your experience space to unfold and yourselves time to process all the feels.

Step 9

Find your Photographer

This is a pretty big deal when it comes to your Elopement. If you pick the right photographer (hey ya!) they can make this whole experience so much easier for you, because they will (or should) be more than just the person who takes your photos.

Think of your photographer as your friend with the local knowledge, who helps you turn your vision into a tangible plan. Who knows the ins and outs of your location, the hidden gems, has the hands on experience of finding the best light, the beautiful secluded spots and knows how to get there safely.

They’ll be someone who you spend quite some time with, so it's important to have a human connection with them too. So make sure it’s a vibe. And of course you should love their work to be able to trust in their creative process, as much as they should try to deeply understand you and your vision. That’s where the magic happens.

Step 10

Choose your Ceremony Location

Why you should rely on your Photographer

An experienced Elopement Photographer will ask to take the lead here. It might feel counter intuitive at first, because your ceremony is usually the emotional peak of your day - why should someone else decide on the setting?

Because there is more to the decision, than going for a spot that looks good in the photos you find on Google Maps. You need to be sure the location works for the actual experience.

How I help couples find their perfect Ceremony location

I’ll ask you questions until I can see your vision as clearly as you. From there I’ll deep dive into research to find a ceremony location, that both looks and feels incredible to have this moment at.

Things I take into consideration when choosing a ceremony location for you: Is it accessible (for all of your guests)? Does it allow for an intimate experience or will there be loads of tourists or other distractions? What about changing lighting conditions and unpredictable weather? Yes, there will also be a backup plan for that.

Also all places I take you to I will have thoroughly scouted and explored before your elopement. So you can rely on me to be your on-location guide without a worry.

Secure your permits (if necessary)

Most places in Europe don’t require them thankfully. But just to be sure, check with your photographer or local authorities.

Step 11

Book all other vendors

Elopements often involve a lot of DIY. I’ve seen brides do their own make-up and hair. Family members preparing home cooked dinners. And couples reading their vows without an official ceremony - or having a friend hold the ceremony for them.

It’s about what feels true to you. So depending on your vision, you don’t necessarily need all of the following elopement vendors on board, but they could sure add to your experience:

  • Celebrant / Officiant

  • Videographer

  • Hair & Make-Up

  • Florist

  • Wedding cake

  • Private chef

Step 12

Book your Travel & Stay

Check for visa requirements

Currently, US citizens can travel to Schengen Zone countries in the EU without a visa. From mid 2025, a new travel authorisation will be required: the ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorization System).

It is not a visa but a quick online pre-screening. The application is quick and easy - but make sure to do it at least a month in advance. Once you apply and get approved, ETIAS lets you make multiple trips of up to 90 days and is valid for three years.

Book your flights first

My preference is to start with booking flights to know the exact travel dates: skyscanner.com and google.com/travel/flights are my go-to pages to find the best connections.

Pro-tip: If possible book directly through the airline website.

Book your lodging

Embrace your home away from home as an important part of your Elopement. Not only will this be your home base where you recharge from all of the adventuring you’ll be doing. It’s also the place where your Getting Ready will take place. So choosing a stay that resonates with your aesthetics and has a unique touch to it is a must.

Think extraordinary Airbnb, cabin in the woods, cottage with a view, tree house or mediterranean villa. Your lodging will be setting the stage for those beautiful, cinematic photos of your love story unfolding - even before you step out into nature together.

Getting around with a rental car

If you’re heading out into the wild, or a fairly remote place, a rental car is often the only option to get there. And it gives you the freedom to explore the area on your own terms. Use well-known platforms like Rentalcars.com, Discovercars.com or Kayak.com and make sure to get a car that can handle the terrain you’ll be driving in. Get insurance and inspect the car before driving off and take photos/ videos of any damage.

Get creative with Elopement Activities

Oh and the fun doesn’t end after your Elopement day. Remember, this whole trip can be dedicated to your adventure. So it’s more like your epic honeymoon and wedding combined.

Step 15

Prepare for your Adventure & have fun

Write your vows

Here are some writing prompts to get you started:

How did you first meet and when did you know it was love? What’s a small thing you love about them that probably noone else would notice? How does your partner make you feel? How do they show up in the world? How did life change for the better since meeting them?Did you face and big challenges that made you grow as a couple? How did you know you found the one? What are your hopes and dreams for your shared future? Got any stories to tell or inside jokes?

Pro Tip: Physically write them out on paper! Wether you prefer handwriting or being a little extra using a typing machine - this is the way to go. Not only can you gift your words to your partner after your elopement, it also saves you using your phone during your ceremony - which takes away the magic of the moment and doesn’t look great on photo either.

Arrive at your Destination early

Travel to your Destination at least a few days in advance! Allow yourselves to settle in, to adjust to the new surroundings, time zone and set the mood for the rest of your adventure. Allow the time and space for this unique experience to unfold fully.

Hey friend, I'm Sina. I believe that the wonders of life are best when shared with likeminded people. It gives life meaning and creates a sense of belonging.

That's what you deserve to experience on your wedding day. A lighthearted celebration of your connection to each other and what brings you joy. An adventure exploring places that leave you in awe while soothing you simultaneously. No pressure, no performing - just you being free, feeling alive.

I help couples create Elopements that feel this way.

And I would love to help you too :)
