Get help with the legalities - If you're planning your Elopement/Wedding remotely and can't be present in Madeira ahead of time, you can grant legal authority Power of Attorney (Procuração) to a trusted local person to complete the legal process at the Civil Registry Office for you (I'm happy to connect you with them <3). This will save you tons of stress, because you can be sure everything is taken care of properly and nothing is missing.

Is Madeira LGBTQ+ friendly?
Is Madeira LGBTQ+ friendly?
Yes! Portugal is one of the most LGBTQ+ friendly countries in Europe, and Madeira is open-minded and welcoming — especially to couples traveling with love and respect. You’ll be safe and celebrated here.
Same-sex marriages have been legal in Portugal since 2010, which makes it a popular destination for couples to elope. Both locals and visitors enjoy a welcoming atmosphere supported by LGBTQIA+ protections and a culture that celebrates the community. In recent years, Portugal has strengthened its commitment to LGBTQIA+ inclusivity with progressive policies for transgender and intersex rights and stricter penalties for hate crimes, ensuring an even more inclusive environment.

Symbolic elopement
Should we get legally married at home and do a symbolic ceremony in Madeira?
To avoid complicating the legal process you could definitely get married in your home country beforehand - many couples do. Having a purely symbolic Elopement often feels more relaxed because you already took care of everything official before your adventure and you can focus completely on your experience.
Though compared to other European countries the legal process is fairly easy to handle (especially with a trusted local who takes it into their hands). Also in Madeira it is possible to legally marry anywhere in nature - so even with a official ceremony you wouldn’t be bound to the court house.
So there is no definitive answer to this question - it’s up to your preference, because both options work well here!

Should we get legally married at home and do a symbolic ceremony in Madeira?
To avoid complicating the legal process you could definitely get married in your home country beforehand - many couples do. Budget & Cost
How much does it cost to elope in Madeira compared to other places in Europe?
Madeira is a hidden gem when it comes to value. You’ll get wild landscapes, dramatic cliffs, and epic views without the Amalfi Coast price tag. On average, you can plan a beautiful elopement here for less than you'd spend in places like Italy, France, or Iceland — and it’ll be way more private too.
Eloping in Madeira can cost anywhere from €6,500 to €22.000+ ($7,500 to $25,000+ USD) depending on how minimalistic and meaningful or luxurious and fully personalised you want to go.

When is the best time to elope in Madeira?
When is the best time to elope in Madeira?
My personal favourite!
🌸 Spring (March – May)
In spring you'll get to experience why Madeira is also known as the "Flower island". During the iconic awakening of nature wildflowers explode across the island— especially in the mountains and along the levadas.
Weather: mild (around 18–24°C / 65–75°F)
Shoulder season: fewer tourists and better prices
Vibe: Romantic and very much alive
☀️ Summer (June – August)
Long, golden days and salty air. Summer in Madeira is perfect if you're dreaming of ocean views, dramatic sunsets and barefoot moments on black sand beaches. Sunrise ceremonies in the mountains are pure magic.
Weather: Hot and sunny (22–28°C / 72–82°F)
High season: More tourists, especially in coastal areas — early mornings & hidden spots are key
Vibe: Adventurous, vibrant, full of light
🍂 Autumn (September–November)
Soft light, warm winds and golden forests — autumn is the island's best-kept secret. It still feels like summer in September, but with way fewer crowds.
Weather: Pleasant and mild (20–26°C / 68–79°F)
Shoulder season: Quiet trails, ideal temperatures, slightly higher chance of rain in November
Vibe: Peaceful, golden, grounded
❄️ Winter (December–February)
Madeira doesn’t do winter like the rest of Europe. Think dramatic cloud inversions, misty forests and moody cliffs — perfect for intimate, otherworldly elopements. And yes, you can still wear your dress without freezing (just layer up a bit).
Weather: Mild and changeable (16–21°C / 61–70°F)
Low season: Quietest time on the island, occasional rain in the mountains
Vibe: Wild, mystical, deeply romantic

Madeira is a year-round elopement dream. But the sweet spots?
April–June: Spring blooms, perfect temps, fewer tourists.
September–November: Golden light, warm ocean, post-summer peace.
Avoid the peak summer months (July–August) if you want solitude.

Getting there
What’s the best way to travel to Madeira?
By plane is the easiest way to get to Madeira. skyscanner.com and google.com/travel/flights are my go-to pages to find the best flight connections and deals.
From Europe: Many cities offer direct flights to Funchal!
From the US or Canada: Fly into Lisbon or Porto first, then hop on a quick flight to Madeira (1.5 hours).
From Australia: Expect a longer journey — but totally worth the detour for this adventure!
Pro Tip
Book directly through the airline website - in case there are changes to your flight/plans this is the safest way to actually get support.
Visa requirements - Make sure to check for visa requirements here if you're not a EU citizen.
If you're from the US, Canada or Australia you can stay visa-free up to 90 days in Portugal!

Transportation
How to get around in Madeira?
Rent a car - it's the best way to explore the island, giving you the flexibility and freedom to visit all the places and hidden gems on your own terms. Also Madeira offers some of the most picturesque drives in the world. For example the ER101 coastal route providing breathtaking cliffside views or the roads through the UNESCO-protected Laurisilva Forest.

Pro Tips
Rent a car with a powerful engine - Madeiras steeps streets and hilly terrain is a challange for your vehicle. Believe me I’ve seen the struggle of people driving their tiny cars in first gear up the hills, the engines smoking and all.
Use well-known platforms like Rentalcars.com, Discover Cars, or Kayak for price comparisons. Major international brands (e.g., Avis, Europcar, Sixt, Hertz) have offices in Madeira.
Get insurance and inspect the car before driving off. Take photos and videos of damage.

lodging
Where to stay in Madeira? Is there enough accommodation for guests if we bring a few people?
Absolutely. Madeira has everything from eco-friendly hideaways and boutique Airbnbs to cliffside villas and cozy mountain homes. Plenty of space if you bring guests — or if you want privacy, that’s easy to find too.
Absolutely. Madeira has everything from eco-friendly hideaways and boutique Airbnbs to cliffside villas and cozy mountain homes. Plenty of space if you bring guests — or if you want privacy, that’s easy to find too.
Pro Tip
Make it photogenic - Your accommodation will be somewhat featured in your getting ready shots. Aesthetics, uniqueness, scenic views, beautiful interior or a green garden go a long way!
Proximity to your Elopement locations - though Madeira is a relatively small island, planning ahead can save you lots of driving time on your big day
The best AirBnbs for your stay
A private space is perfect for the quiet, intimate vibe of your Elopement. I put together a list of the top 8 Airbnb's to Elope in Madeira. These Airbnb's are all throughout the island and include beautiful villa's, secluded cottages, nature glamping and more.
Hotels & Villas in Madeira
If you'd rather stay in a luxurious hotel or beautiful villa here are some amazing options:

Wedding attire
What kind of clothes actually work for an Adventure Elopement in Madeira?
Form follows function - remember you're dressing for an adventure!
Non-restrictive Dress - Eloping in Madeira is all about exploring nature. Your dress shouldn't feel like a hindrance but rather let you move freely. A-Line or Sheath Dress are a great choice for example.
Flowy Fabrics - The weather can be warm and humid, so breathable fabrics are ideal. Also flowy materials like chiffon, silk, or organza catch the breeze beautifully, adding a ethereal feel to the photos.
Comfortable Shoes - Since you’ll likely be walking on rocky paths, forest trails, or even beaches, it’s best to have footwear that’s both comfortable and safe. If you plan to go hiking, bring spare hiking boots.
Layers - Higher altitudes, like Pico do Arieiro, can be chilly, especially at sunrise or sunset. Bring a light jacket, a light shawl, wrap, or cape. Opt for materials like silk or cashmere that add warmth without bulk.
Veil or Flower Crown - For a more dramatic, ethereal look, a lightweight veil or a flower crown with local blooms are magical.

It's called "Adventure Elopement" for a reason. Don't miss out on the following activities - wether you plan them for your Elopement day or the rest of your stay. (And yes, I've tried them all first hand!)

Trust me, you won't regret getting up early for the show nature puts on up at Pico do Arieiro for sunrise. Make sure to arrive ahead of time as the parking get's crowded quickly. It's also the perfect way to start the hike to Pico Ruivo, which will take your breath away. It's quite challenging but the views are worth it.

Hike along the Levadas
Levadas are irrigation channels originally built to bring water from the mountains to the drier agricultural regions of Madeira. Alongside these channels are narrow footpaths that make for some of the most scenic and accessible hiking trails on the island. With over 2,000 kilometers (1,243 miles) of levada paths winding through forests, mountains, valleys, and tunnels, there's a hike for every level of difficulty.

Elope like a pro
How to plan an Elopement in Madeira step by step:
01
Dream up your vision
How do you want your day to feel? Write it down. Think about what drew you to Madeira — was it the mountains, the ocean, the quiet magic? Let that guide every choice you make from here.

A good photographer is more than someone with a camera — they’ll help you plan, location scout, build your timeline, and keep things flowing naturally on the day. (Hint: you're in the right place.)
